"Gut health" has become one of the biggest buzzwords in nutrition โ which means it's also one of the most misunderstood. Behind the trend, though, is genuinely fascinating science. Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that influence far more than digestion.
What is the microbiome, really?
Your gut microbiome is the community of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms living mainly in your large intestine. Far from being passive passengers, they help break down fibre your body can't digest alone, produce short-chain fatty acids that nourish your gut lining, support your immune system, manufacture certain vitamins, and communicate with your brain via what's known as the gut-brain axis.
Why diversity matters more than any single "superfood"
One of the clearest findings in microbiome research is that a more diverse microbiome is generally a healthier one. Rather than chasing a single "gut health" food or supplement, the evidence points to variety โ different fibre types feed different bacterial species, and a wider range of plant foods tends to support a more diverse, resilient microbial community.
The link to chronic disease
Research increasingly connects an imbalanced gut microbiome (dysbiosis) with a wide range of conditions โ inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even mood disorders. The relationship is complex and researchers are still untangling cause from effect in many cases, but the pattern is consistent enough that gut health is now considered relevant well beyond digestive symptoms alone.
How I approach it with clients
- Aim for plant diversity โ a genuinely useful target is 30 different plant foods a week, counting vegetables, fruit, legumes, wholegrains, nuts, seeds and herbs. It sounds like a lot, but it adds up quickly once you count varieties, not just categories.
- Include fermented foods regularly โ yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso introduce live cultures and have been shown in research to support microbial diversity.
- Don't fear resistant starch โ cooked-and-cooled potatoes, rice and legumes contain resistant starch, a favourite fuel source for beneficial gut bacteria.
- Go easy on ultra-processed foods โ diets high in additives and low in fibre are consistently linked with reduced microbial diversity.
- Be cautious with unnecessary antibiotics and restrictive diets โ both can significantly reduce microbial diversity; restrictive elimination diets should generally be short-term and supervised, not a long-term default.
What about probiotic supplements?
Probiotic supplements can be helpful for specific, evidence-supported situations โ such as during or after antibiotic use โ but they're not a substitute for a fibre- and plant-rich diet, and "gut health" supplements marketed broadly online often overstate what the evidence actually supports. Food first is almost always my starting point.
The bottom line
Your gut microbiome is shaped daily by what you eat, and small, consistent changes in dietary diversity tend to matter more than any single "gut-healing" product. If you're dealing with persistent digestive symptoms, it's worth having these properly assessed rather than self-treating โ there's often more going on than diet alone.
